This mural was inspired by a painting I first saw as a boy — one of many by Gilbert Williams in a calendar I was given. I remember cutting out the pages and pinning them to my bedroom wall with tacks. One in particular stayed with me, an image of a glowing temple floating above the earth. It made my imagination soar beyond this world.
Years later, I painted this mural in the Garland Business District, not as a copy, but as a tribute. I made changes — added trees, adjusted the lighting, placed a glowing stag in the scene — but the spirit of that childhood memory is still at the heart of it.
I don’t know how this mural will affect the people who pass it. But maybe, just maybe, a kid will see it and feel what I once felt. That painting left Mr. Williams' hands long ago. Now this one has left mine.
